Don't buy a puppy.....

Since I've been considering getting a dog I've been reading lots of animal shelter and rescue websites and it is truly shocking how many horrific stories of cruelty these animals have to tell. The cases of cruelty carried out against one dog by one owner are bad enough (such as a dachsund brought into a shelter with FOUR BROKEN and IMPROPERLY HEALED legs and a terrible fear of men), but puppy mills are even worse since hundred of dogs suffer lives of abuse, neglect, and confinement in tiny filthy cages with NO medical care despite the terrible congenital defects passed on by years of careless breeding practices. Not only do the breeder dogs in these horriqble places suffer, but the hundreds of puppies born who often have congenital diseases and are quickly weakened by preventable diseases such as heartworms, mange, ringworm, and kennel cough. Many of these puppies do not survive their first year, leading to huge vet bills and broken hearts. Stop puppy mills now! Do NOT buy from stores that sell puppies. Do NOT buy puppies from a breeder unless you have made certain that the breeder is reputable and humane. Be especially wary of dogs for sale by the roadside or advertised in classified ads. TELL your family and friends about these horrific practices, and remind them to adopt a shelter dog whenever possible. It is criminal that SO many puppies are bred and bought (especially under such horrific conditions) when thousands of shelter dogs die every year.
